Sooner or later, every vehicle owner needs to have their car, truck, or SUV repaired. It can be challenging to know which repair shop is best, or which one will produce the most optimal results for the fairest price. As you consider different repair shops, one factor to keep in mind is whether the repair shop is certified or non-certified.
Before you schedule an appointment at any repair shop, you can ask for a rundown of all relevant certifications and credentials. (Many repair shops will include this information on their website, as well.) There are a number of reasons why this information is worth ascertaining.
What Does Certification Mean?
At the most basic level, certification just means that the technicians who work at the body shop have received formal training, including training on particular methods or advanced techniques. Anyone can open a repair shop, but certifications show that the shop you’re dealing with is reputable.
Also note that, to maintain their certification, body shops must comply with certain standards of quality, integrity, and professionalism, as outlined by independent certification boards. If you have an issue with the repair shop and feel like they are not dealing fairly with you, their certification provides accountability: You can reach out to the accrediting body to reach some kind of resolution.
Finally, be aware that some shops may be certified to work on certain types of automobiles. This should give you every assurance that they will do good, quality work, likely relying on authentic parts.
Non-certified repair shops can offer none of these assurances. This does not mean that all non-certified shops are bad, but it does mean that they present a higher level of risk.
