When something goes wrong with a car, many people are quick to assume that the issue is something mechanical. But in reality, most problems actually arise from the vehicle’s electrical system.

Below are five signs that your car’s electrical system is malfunctioning, as well as why looking for auto collision repair services is still a good idea even if your car’s problems are electrical in nature.

1. The engine won’t crank

Many people think a bad battery is to blame for a car that won’t crank. But the alternator is a key player in starting an engine. The alternator generates electrical energy and helps the battery provide the spark needed for the engine to start. The alternator is also responsible for charging the battery. So if your battery is dead, the problem might be traced back to a faulty alternator.

2. Malfunctioning lights

Headlights, brake lights, turn signals and interior lights all run on electricity. If your vehicle’s lights are getting dimmer or behaving erratically, there may be an electrical issue to blame.

3. Blowing fuses

A fuse box is designed to break up overvoltages and prevent your car’s electrical systems from drawing too much current. An occasional blown fuse is usually nothing to fret about . But if your car is blowing multiple fuses in a short amount of time, it may indicate a failing electrical system that is not properly routing or regulating currents.

4. Strange smells

The wires in your car are wrapped in plastic or rubber casing. An electrical problem may cause the wires to run hot and melt or burn the protective casing. If this happens, you may notice a foul smell in the car and should pull over and turn off the car immediately.

5. Infotainment systems going haywire

All the technology on your dashboard – GPS system, radio, backup camera, touchscreen, etc. – are all powered by your vehicle’s electrical system. If any of these begin to fail or perform strangely, there may be an underlying electrical problem such as a short in the system.
